The Evil Within 2 – Review Roundup

Shinji Mikami’s follow-up to his Resident Evil follow-up.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of horror games. I enjoyed Resident Evil when I was younger and enjoy horror movies, but as I’ve gotten older, I have gravitated away from survival horror video games. I did not play the first Evil Within and do not plan to play this sequel, but as a major release, I thought it was worthwhile to compile a review roundup.

Metacritic: 81/100 (as of 10/13/17)

IGN: 8/10 (Great) – “Although a disjointed plot and weak protagonist make it slow to get started, being pursued through an intriguingly bizarre world by plentiful and disturbing monsters kept my palms sweaty and my heart in my throat thanks to a strict adherence to the most important survival horror rule: you should always be on the back foot.”

Gamespot: 8/10 (Great) – “What this cerebral horror game does isn’t totally new, but it rarely feels routine, and offers plenty of surprises….the sequel does an admirable job of ratcheting up the tension and scares when it needs to, while also giving you the freedom to explore and proceed how you want. It’s a tough thing to balance, but The Evil Within 2 does it remarkably well”

Eurogamer: No score – “The Evil Within 2 takes cues not just from the legendary Resident Evil titles but also, rather terrifyingly, from open world tactical shooters….The sequel is another curious outgrowth, but its changes and additions often feel more wayward than fascinating, and in key respects – the story, certain levels, those niggles in stealth and combat – it falls rather flat. Still, there are chills and spills enough here to sate most patrons of the bloody arts. Whether a third game is warranted at this point is another matter.”

GamesRadar: 3.5/5 – “The Evil Within 2 doesn’t quite manage to step out of the first game’s shadow – but while it may not have the same bold, unified style, you won’t have to worry about frustrating mechanics or enraging difficulty spikes. If you’ve got a soft spot for the original game in your survival horror-loving heart, you’ll surely enjoy this sequel…After my 16-hour-long journey alongside Sebastian, I find myself looking back fondly on The Evil Within 2, with its satisfying mix of tense scares, hard-hitting combat, and impressive hallucinatory set pieces.”

GameRevolution: 3.5/5 – “he Evil Within 2 is a worthy sequel that makes a number of bold decisions. For those solely looking for the survival horror thrills of the first game, its spotlight upon combat will likely be a disappointment, as will its introduction of a dull open world. However, there’s plenty tucked away in The Evil Within 2 that will appeal to both fans of the original and new players”

Windows Central: 4.5/5 – “The Evil Within 2 is a frightening game…. he game itself is improved nicely over the original, with a great open-world structure and lots of interesting missions to take on. The actual story is extremely compelling…If you’re looking for a lengthy and frightening adventure this Halloween season, look no farther than The Evil Within 2.”

    1. I’m sorta with you. I enjoyed Until Dawn, but that was more like a slasher movie to me. I don’t really do horror games these days, although I have great memories of playing the old Resident Evil games when I was younger.
